In 1910, Matisse visited Munich to see an exhibition of Islamic art. Already interested in Orientalism here Matisse saw the largest array of Islamic textiles, carpets, ceramics and metalwork ever seen in Europe#Matisse acknowledged Cezanne, described by Picasso as the "father of us all", as the greatest influence on his work. In 1899 he bought Cezanne's "Three Bathers" which he donated to the Musee du Petit Palais in 1936#"Fauvism was a brief period during which we thought it necessary to exalt all colours together and sacrifice none of them"#Matisse gained official recognition in 1921 when the French government bought one of his works. In 1925 he was created a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour#Francoise Gilot, Picasso's mistress said "Pablo always sought to charm Matisse, like a dancer, but in the end it was Matisse who conquered Pablo"#Matisse visited Renoir in 1917. Renoir was "disapproving" of Matisse's work, but complimented him on his handling of black#In 1930 Matisse visited Tahiti in search of a "different" light, stopping in America en route. He was impressed by the "blinding" light of California - the Cote d'Azur on a huge scale#Matisse sought to free colour from its descriptive function in favour of its emotive qualities: "When I paint green, it doesn't mean grass; when I paint blue it doesn't mean sky"#In 1908 Matisse opened an art school.
